Discover this through the experience offered at the Fuerte El Rompido hotel, recently selected as one of the top 10 establishments in Spain in terms of hotel sustainability and refurbishment.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marbella, 22 February, 2016. Although the hotel industry<\/strong> is one of the areas experiencing most evolution in the field of sustainability, hotels still generate CO2 emissions<\/strong>. In the case of Fuerte El Rompido<\/a> (Huelva), located close to a unique natural environment made up of the Odiel Wetlands<\/em>, the Enebrales Area of Natural Beauty and Do\u00f1ana<\/em>, in 2015 <\/strong>these emissions amounted to 995 tonnes of CO2<\/strong>, caused mainly by the consumption of electrical energy<\/strong> and propane<\/strong>, the fuel used in kitchens and for heating water.<\/p>\n

As a direct result of its clear ecological conscience<\/strong>, this hotel has implemented numerous sustainable energy saving and efficient management measures, leading it to be recently voted as one of the top 10 hotels in Spain<\/strong> in terms of sustainability<\/em> and hotel refurbishment, <\/em>winning the Re Think Hotel prize, in the TSMEDIA <\/strong>category.<\/p>\n

Due to the difficulty<\/strong> of making further reductions<\/strong> to its emissions,<\/strong> other alternatives<\/strong> were sought to neutralise<\/strong> the carbon footprint<\/a> generated by the hotel\u2019s activities. The solution<\/strong> was provided by the company ALLCOT<\/a>, involving so-called CO2 compensation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIF YOU CAN\u2019T CUT DOWN, COMPENSATE\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0The truth is, it\u2019s very simple. It consists simply of making a financial investment<\/strong> in a project<\/strong> that removes<\/strong> from the atmosphere<\/strong> a volume of emissions equivalent to<\/strong> those produced by the company<\/strong> wanting to neutralise<\/strong> its carbon footprint<\/strong> and reduce it to 0<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The project <\/strong>selected by Fuerte El Rompido, validated and verified by the VCS standard<\/a>, was located in Belo Horizonte<\/strong> (Brazil), involving the reuse of energy<\/strong> from biogas<\/strong> taken from a landfill site<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For many years this landfill site has been emitting gases such as methane. The company ALLCOT installed a system to collect and transport these gases – basically methane -, which it then burns at a high temperature to produce electricity. The result is clean energy used for their own consumption or for injection into the Brazilian national grid.<\/em><\/p>\n

One of the most interesting aspects<\/strong> of this compensation<\/strong> method is that, in addition to creating ecological benefits<\/strong>, the selected projects produced added value<\/strong> as they involved the creation of numerous jobs<\/strong> in the area.<\/p>\n
