Last Friday, 7th<\/sup> of July, took place the anniversary party of the first hotel that opened its doors in the centre of Marbella Village: Fuerte Marbella<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was July 1957<\/strong> when Jos\u00e9 Luque Manzano<\/strong>, accompanied by his wife Isabel Garc\u00eda Bard\u00f3n<\/strong> and their children, left his hometown of Estepa<\/strong> to open a business by the sea<\/strong> in what was then the fishing village of Marbella<\/strong>. Nobody understood his commitment to opening a hotel by the beach<\/em>, on land<\/strong> which at the time was seen as being arid<\/strong> and infertile<\/strong>. But it was all very clear to the founder of the company that has today become Fuerte Group<\/a><\/strong> Hotels, one of the best known hotel chains in Andalusia<\/strong>: the privileged climate of the Malagan coastline, together with the magic of the Mediterranean<\/strong> would attract many foreigners<\/strong> seeking sun, sea and sand<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

And this was how, against all odds, the first establishment<\/strong> to be opened in the centre of Marbella Village, the Fuerte Marbella Hotel<\/a><\/strong>, served as a catalyst<\/strong> for a destination<\/strong> that, over the year, became one of the most important hotspots for international tourism<\/strong> in Spain<\/strong> and the Mediterranean basin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Last Friday, the 7th of July<\/strong>, was the 60th anniversary<\/strong> of that mythical opening<\/strong>, a milestone that the current CEO<\/strong> of the chain (Jos\u00e9 Luque Manzano passed away in 1984) and her children<\/strong> wanted to mark with a party<\/strong> with the main executives of the company, family members, friends and representatives of the Costa del Sol<\/strong>\u2019s tourism, economic and cultural sectors<\/strong>, among others. The event<\/strong> took place in the hotel’s spectacular gardens, which afford wonder views of the Mediterranean Sea<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Fuerte Marbella, a Marbella Classic<\/h2>\n

Fuerte Marbella was named in honour of the Fort<\/strong> that is found outside the main building, a fortress constructed in 1554<\/strong> on the orders of Charles V<\/strong> to repel attacks by pirates, and that was subsequently used as a powder magazine. One of the first famous visitors<\/strong> to stay at Fuerte Marbella was Walt Disney<\/a><\/strong>, who took a room at the hotel in 1958<\/strong>. His visit caused a great stir in the village and among people of the establishment, including Pedro Guerrero<\/strong>, who was a bellhop at the time and is now retired, who still remembers walking Pluto<\/em> – the director\u2019s authentic dog – on the beach at Marbella, in exchange for succulent tips.<\/p>\n

After him came many other celebrities like the poet Rafael Alberti<\/strong>, and particularly the great Lola Flores<\/strong>, who before purchasing her famous \u201cLos Gitanillos<\/em>\u201d residence in Marbella, spent many summers at Fuerte Marbella.<\/p>\n

This history<\/strong>, just like the story told by the actors of the film \u201cHoliday in Spain<\/em>\u201d, filmed at the hotel, has not been forgotten, particularly thanks to the Museum<\/strong> that the Luque family<\/em> built a few years ago inside the old fort. This magical spot<\/strong>, today found on the hotel\u2019s Terraza de los Pinos<\/em>, allows visitors to take a tour of the evolution of tourism<\/strong> in our country over the last 60 years<\/strong>. That is, almost since its beginning. Old telephone exchanges, cash registers, brochures and posters<\/em> from yesteryear, crockery<\/em> and cutlery<\/em>; endless pieces that help the visitor to go back to the roots of an industry that is today considered as one of the main<\/strong> economic activities<\/em> of our country.
