The Andalusian chain, considered to be one of the most sustainable hotel companies in Spain, has created a campaign that includes several actions relating to respecting the environment and protecting sea beds<\/strong><\/p>\n

22 January 2020. Coinciding with the start of the International Tourism Fair in Madrid, FITUR<\/strong>, Fuerte Group Hotels<\/a>, one of the most sustainable<\/strong> hotel chains<\/strong> in Spain, has revealed the first actions<\/strong> of the \u201cClean Seas<\/strong>\u201d project, an initiative which the group wants to use to strengthen the company’s sustainable development<\/strong> policies and continue working towards fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Support for the Aula del Mar de M\u00e1laga project<\/h2>\n

\"Aula<\/p>\n

All the establishments<\/strong> owned by Fuerte Group Hotels<\/strong>, apart from Fuerte Grazalema, are located next to the sea.<\/strong> As a result, the chain is acutely aware<\/strong> of the need to protect the seas and oceans<\/strong> and is familiar with other projects <\/strong>that share this<\/strong> as their main objective<\/strong>.\u00a0 That is why one of the first initiatives <\/strong>chosen to kickstart the \u201cClean Seas<\/strong>\u201d campaign was to collaborate with Aula del Mar de M\u00e1laga, <\/strong>a scientific research organisation which has become a benchmark <\/strong>in the area for its commitment to educating <\/strong>and participating <\/strong>in conserving<\/strong> natural resources<\/strong> and improving<\/strong> natural ecosystems<\/strong>. On this occasion, a 1,500-euro<\/strong> donation will be made to support a conservation project<\/strong> that the NGO is carrying out on the Andalusian coastline to protect one of our endangered<\/strong> species<\/strong>: the seahorse<\/strong>. The money will be used for an outreach plan<\/strong> about these delicate creatures so as to make the academic community and society in general aware of their current plight<\/strong>, and the dangers<\/strong> and threats<\/strong> that they face every day.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Collaboration agreement with IbizaPreservation<\/h2>\n

\"Ibiza<\/p>\n

In line with the above proposal, and with the same aim of developing the most respectful<\/strong> tourism<\/strong> towards the environment<\/strong> possible, Fuerte Group Hotels<\/strong> has chosen Ibiza,<\/strong> where it opened its first hotel in the Balearic Islands in 2019, to carry out other exciting sustainability initiatives<\/strong>. These will be implemented by IbizaPreservation<\/strong><\/a>, an organisation promoting the conservation of the natural value and beauty of these islands, as well as their sustainability. The hotel chain has signed a collaboration agreement<\/strong> with this organisation through which a further investment shall be made of 1,500 euros<\/strong>. The money will go towards financing the planning and execution of the preparations for the Marine Forum of Ibiza and Formentera<\/strong> 2020<\/strong>, an event offering a space for debate<\/strong>. The first edition took place last September and its mission is to become an annual event<\/strong>. This platform will bring together the best national <\/strong>and international experts<\/strong> on ecology, sustainability <\/strong>and marine funds<\/strong> in one place, where they can exchange ideas and present innovative projects for conserving the Mediterranean and, in particular, the ecosystem in Ibiza and Formentera.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Plastic Free Goal<\/h2>\n

\"Objetivo<\/p>\n

The third proposal<\/strong> of the Clean Seas<\/strong> campaign is to manage a short to medium term<\/strong> plan<\/strong> aiming to eliminate<\/strong> the use<\/strong> of plastic <\/strong>in all the Fuerte Group Hotels<\/strong>. To achieve this, the company has already begun to replace <\/strong>many of the plastic products<\/strong> used on a daily basis in its hotels with others<\/strong> made from more eco-friendly<\/strong> and recyclable<\/strong> materials<\/strong> that are biodegradable <\/strong>and more compostable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For example, dispensers and bottles of shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and moisturising cream (or body milk) are now being manufactured from oxo-biodegradable plastics<\/strong> (a fossil-based polymer oxidised through the addition of a catalyst); 30 ml and 40 ml bottles<\/strong> substituted with 340 ml<\/strong> oxy-biodegradable bottles; the single-use glasses (plastic) which have been used up until now are now made from paper <\/strong>or PLA (polylactic acid);<\/strong> traditional straws have been replaced by bio<\/strong> straws; sanitary and laundry bags are made from potato starch<\/strong>; fabric slippers are no longer provided in plastic bags but instead in a cardboard<\/strong> box and several other complementary items such as dental, shaving, ladies’ or shoe-shining items and sponges, are now supplied wrapped in tissue paper<\/strong> instead of plastic. Furthermore, looking ahead to the 2020<\/strong> season<\/strong>, new measures shall be introduced such as using bin bags made from potato starch<\/strong> in hotel rooms; replacing plastic pens with cardboard ones and using fabric<\/strong> to create the wristbands that identify VIP and All-Inclusive guests, to name but a few.\u00a0<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

Through each of these measures<\/strong>, and others which are sure to be implemented throughout this project, Fuerte Group Hotels<\/strong> wants to contribute to recovering<\/strong> the seas and oceans<\/strong> next to almost all of its hotels and conserving the flora and fauna<\/strong> that inhabit the privileged natural surroundings<\/strong> in which many of them are found. For the Andalusian chain, which was the first Spanish hotel chain<\/strong> to achieve ISO 14001 environmental certification<\/strong> for one of its hotels (Fuerte Conil Resort<\/strong>), the reason why tourism<\/strong> has been successful<\/strong> in remaining one of the main industries<\/strong> in Spain is that sustainability distinguishes <\/strong>it from other destinations<\/strong> run by the competition.<\/strong><\/p>\n
